Cadiz News Release, FAQ Provide In-Depth BLM Response

Cadiz has publicly outlined the multi-tiered response it is implementing following the Bureau of Land Management’s suspect determination regarding the water project’s proposed pipeline route. (A route, by the way, that avoids impacts to desert plants and animals and is line with federal policy to group utility corridors, rather than scatter them about willy-nilly.)

The Cadiz news release outlining the response is here and a very thorough FAQ explaining the entire BLM issue in detail is provided here.

In brief, the Cadiz response is:

  • Obtain further clarification of BLM’s reasoning in making what appears to be an incorrect determination.
  • Oppose the continuation of Sen. Feinstein’s appropriations bill rider that tries to create a Catch 22 that would delay this critical drought solution.
  • Evaluate filing applications with BLM for one or more of three pipeline routes to carry water saved from evaporation by Cadiz to the  Colorado River Aqueduct.
  • Evaluate the filing of an amendment to the existing right-of-way for the Cadiz Northern Pipeline.
  • Evaluate legislative and judicial remedies.

The news release and FAQ explain these responses in detail. Of note is Cadiz’s view of the potential long-term impact of the BLM determination:

We have not changed the timeline for the delivery of conserved water to Southern California in 2017. We remain optimistic that by using all the resources we have at our disposal – strong science, established case law and broad public and political support – we will be able to correct this politically motivated and erroneous determination in time to begin delivering water to Southern California in 2017.
