Laborers’ Union Endorses Cadiz Water Project

Building on a growing supporters list, the Cadiz Water Project just received a new endorsement from the Southern California District Council of LiUNA, the Laborers’ International Union of North America.

In a letter to Jeff Kightlinger, GM of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the AFL-CIO-affiliated union urged MWD and Southern California elected officials to “do all they can to support this important water project, so that we can put our community to work as soon as possible and our region can enjoy greater water supply reliability without further delay.”

The District Council represents 14 area unions and fights for infrastructure investments that will make Southern California more competitive and create good jobs – both good reasons for supporting the Cadiz Water Project. The union wrote:

We write today to express our support for the Cadiz Valley Water Conservation, Recovery and Storage Project, which would provide 2.5 million acre-feet of new water to Southern California over 50 years. As California confronts an historic drought as well as long-term infrastructure challenges, this innovative new supply could meet the annual water needs of more than 400,000 people across the region and represents an essential opportunity to create local jobs.

According to a study by economist John Husing, constructing the Cadiz well field, pipeline and related infrastructure will create 5,900 jobs.

LiUNA’s support for the Cadiz Water Project kicked off in 2013 when Laborers Local 783, which represents construction craft laborers in San Bernardino County, commissioned its own separate review of the Project by respected Southern California hydrologist Anthony Brown. Brown concluded the Project is technically sound and can be implemented safely and sustainably.
