LOW-SALT CADIZ WATER WOULD SAVE SO CAL $8 MILLION/YEAR

A study by the global engineering firm CH2MHill has found that annually placing 50,000 acre feet of low-salt Cadiz water in the Metropolitan Water District’s (MWD) Colorado River Aqueduct would significantly dilute the aqueduct water’s salt content, leading to $8 million in annual savings to Southern California residents, businesses, farmers and water agencies.

Lest someone try to declare this news to be false in any way, note that CH2MHill used the most current version of a computer model developed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and MWD to predict the financial damage caused by various levels of salt in the local water supply. To run the model, CH2MHill used public information on the salt content and volumes of Cadiz water and the Colorado River Aqueduct’s water.

This is an example of “Best Available Science,” which federal law requires in its environmental reviews.
